A Calgary priest has been charged in connection to alleged sexual assaults dating back to 2012.
In October 2018, police received a complaint from a woman who said she was sexually touched without her consent on several occasions by a priest at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in northeast Calgary.
On Jan. 11, police arrested Rev. Malcolm Joe D’Souza, 62. He is charged with one count of sexual assault.
Police say the alleged assaults occurred in September and October of 2012. Father D’Souza was pastor of St. Mark’s Parish from 2010 to 2016. He also served in a number of other communities in southern Alberta.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary released a statement on Jan. 15 saying it is aware of the charges and that D’Souza was placed on administrative leave and prohibited from priestly ministry in October.
The diocese says it will not comment further since the matter is before the courts and that it is cooperating with the police investigation.
D’Souza is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 21.
