Physician Speaks on Bill C-7

We interview Dr. Robert Hauptman, a family physician in St. Albert, on the passing of Bill C-7 which expands access to euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada.

He says he was “very surprised” that the bill passed as he felt that his colleagues made compelling arguments against the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). The new bill now allows those without foreseeable death to access assisted suicide.

Hauptman says that “we are now being asked as physicians in this country to take the lives of individuals where death is not in the foreseeable future. In fact death may not be in 5, 10, 15, 20 years if these people were allowed to continue to live their lives. That is a fundamental shift in the way we practice as physicians.”
